Colorado has become an extended home to many successful entrepreneurs and CEOs. One of the many entrepreneurs that visit a lot is a musical artist. Scotty ATL hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and has been coming to Colorado for business and to perform since 2011. Scotty isn’t just known for his music; he has been making Grillz for the last 10 years and has created pieces for your favorite artist and teams. He dropped his latest album, “Candler Rose To Melrose,” in October, and the music critics and fanbase received the project well. It was only fitting to take the album and perform it on tour. Shortly after the project was released, it was announced that Scotty ATL would embark on a tour for the project titled “The Show Ya Grillz Tour.” Bringing alongside one of his signees, JustCallMeVeto, from his own record label “Tha Cool Club.” During the summertime, Veto released his debut EP for the “Tha Cool Club” titled “Give Me My Flowers.” Also, for Veto, although he has been in music for a while now, this is his first time going on tour, proving his hard work is significantly showing.
For the first few tour dates, Scotty also is bringing alongside platinum recording artist DJ Luke Nasty. Luke is known for being the “sample king” and rose to success in 2015 with his Xscape-sampled track “Might Be.” He followed up “Might Be” with his biggest song to date, “OTW,” which also samples Tony! Toni! Tone!’s hit single “Whatever You Want.” He would also bring singer/songwriter Micah Kiyo, his partner in the grill/jewelry business. The openers for the tour would be a collective called “Playlist Academy” from Atlanta, Georgia. The collective consists of 6 to 7 solo artists. Starting with Blessico, Franke Elu, Bhetto, Infinite Supreme, Quisha, and Stickz Greenz. Lastly, opening up for the show would be Denver’s own “Colorado Myrical” and “Sushi2Rawww”. Myrical has been known for making music for years and has his label, “Absolute Music Group,” making significant noise in Colorado. Sushi is originally from Houston, Texas, but he recently relocated to Denver, Colorado, and his career has been upward since.
A day before the show, there was a mixer for media and DJs in the city to network with the artists performing. I got a chance to do my first live in-person interview for LizzieBrodie.com, and I can’t lie; I was initially nervous, but after a while, it started to come quickly to me. Lizzie Brodie has been a staple in our culture, and community for a decade and her hardworking spirit never goes unnoticed. She is the reason why the mixer was possible, and is the main sponsor of the event. The first artist to be interviewed was the man of the hour, Scotty ATL. We got to sit down and chop it up about his latest project, how he got into making Grillz, and he even opened up about his recent jewelry collaboration with none other than the NBA. This collaboration consisted of making Grillz custom designed with 13 different NBA teams’ cities and team names displayed on them. Shortly after our interview, I quickly had another with my brother JustCallMeVeto. We got to touch on him going on his first tour, the process behind recording his latest album, and the wisdom passed down to him by his big brother Scotty ATL. My awesome friend Dani Baby happened to be interviewing artists as well, she interviewed Playlist Academy, Dj Luke Nasty, and Micah Kiyo as the night went on. I got to interview the home team, Colorado Myrical, and Sushi2Raww. Our conversation consisted of what music they were working on, their progress as an artist, their favorite artist besides themselves, and lastly, congratulating them on being on tour performing. Myrical is preparing to release a compilation album for his label “Absolute Music Group,” soon to be expected. He also recently released a single with DJ Luke Nasty. Sushi released his album “2Raw” two weeks ago, and his project has also been well-received by listeners and critics. The album already has stars on the first 3 tracks of the project, which is always a good sign and indication.
The following day, Jalen (TM Roshii) and BJ (Skuba Vision) got to Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom early as we had media passes with all access to the artist and the stage. We went downstairs to the artist lobby, where there was food being prepared for all artists and guests. Shortly after going down, we were greeted by Infinite Supreme and Bheeto of Playlist Academy and Pablo Hendrix (Scotty ATL’s camera man). Jalen and BJ took pictures and footage of the artist as they all prepped to kick off their first night of tour in Denver, Colorado. After politicking with the artist, I went upstairs and found a b vspot in the crowd close to the stage. DJ KTone and Scotty ATL’s DJ and jeweler, DJ JayBird, began to play music we all know and love as the artist was backstage preparing to go on. The first artist to perform was Sushi, as he completed 2 songs from his new project. Playlist Academy was after, each artist performing two pieces of their own before passing the mic to the other. They all are very talented and make different styles of music, so the collective complements each other well. Quisha and Bheeto show the energetic side of the group with their songs “Moshpit” and Bheeto’s “Ways.” While Infinite Supreme, Blessico gives a more chill, relaxed vibe. Frankee Lu brings out the more sensual side of the collective, putting her vocal ability on display. Lastly, StickzGreenz brings out the rockstar aspect of the collective, genuinely being the definition of genre-less, just an artist altogether. Ultimately I feel like more artists should do something like this; it brings attention to multiple artists at once, like a group, with them actually being solo artists.
Micah Viyo was the next artist to grace the stage. This would also be her first time performing here in Colorado. Her vocals and outfit demanded the crowd’s attention, and they were paying attention. Once she was done, the DJ came out, and there was a short intermission as we prepared for Colorado Myrical and then DJ Luke Nasty. Myrical approached the stage and put on a great show as he performed 3 songs ending his set with his DJ Luke Nasty’s featured track “64 Bounce“. Although Luke didn’t complete the song with him during Myricals set, he brought him back out to do the song during his set. He then went on to perform a hand few songs, the majority of their songs we all remember and enjoy hearing. For example, he performed hit singles” Might Be,” “Baller,” “Last Night”, and “OTW.” Veto would be the last artist to perform before the man of the event Scotty ATL. Veto multiple tracks, but what stood out to me most was when he performed the two songs he told me were his favorite, “My Story“ and “Give Me My Flowers.” He then brought Sushi2Raw back out to perform another single from his latest project “2RAW“. After Veto received a standing ovation, the DJ encouraged everyone to go ahead and get drinks, as Scotty had just arrived and would soon be coming on stage. The lights were dimmed, and Scotty ATL came out wearing a Mitchell & Ness Carmelo Anthony jersey, shorts, and his Denver Nuggets collaboration grill. He performed several different tracks from his latest album “Candler Rose to Melrose.” He even brought TheyCallMeVeto back to perform his single “My Story/Break The Chains,” which features Scotty. Soon after, Scotty told the crowd, “I know y’all all too cool and shit, but I need all of y’all in the back come up here a little bit closer and fuck with me.” There was a giveaway for merch on stage; which went well, and then it was back to business.
After the show, Scotty ATL and his team made molds for Grillz live in person. Many people lined up to get their piece (including myself). We all took pictures after the show and exchanged contact information again, and the two days that seemed like a week were finally over.
