In May 2023, Muller announced her debut studio album Sorry I’m Late, which was released on September 29th, 2023.
Mae Muller has been around the music industry practically her whole life, as her aunt happens to be Grammy award-winning music video director Sophie Muller. Mae has been writing songs since the tender age of 8, and in 2007, thanks to her aunt Sophie, she appeared in Mika’s “Grace Kelly” video. While working at a pub in Kentish Town as a server, Muller began showcasing her musical ability by doing live performances at the pub. Muller asked a co-worker who knew how to produce music to make a few demo records for her in exchange for a bottle of wine. She posted the demo tracks to her SoundCloud in 2017, and later that year, Muller was discovered and signed by her managers Richard Griffiths and Harry Magee. Her debut project was titled After Hours and was released in February 2018, followed by the release of her second EP, Frankly, seven months later, in September 2018. To make 2018 even more unique, later on in the year, Mae announced she had officially signed with Capitol Records UK
The following year, Mae released her compilation album “Chapter 1” before joining the English girl group “Little Mix” as an opening act on their “LM5 Tour”. The tour comprised 40 sold-out shows across Europe and grossed over $27 million worldwide. Mae eventually found herself on her headlining tour, traveling across the United Kingdom and Europe for her newly released EP “No One Else, Not Even You.” Her first billboard appearance came after working with the Swedish musical collective Neiked and rap star Polo G on their single titled “Better Days.” The track cracked the Hot 100 Billboard chart at 57, as well as the 10 Top Pop Airplay chart; eventually becoming a platinum record. Mae was chosen to represent the UK as a performer for the 67th Annual Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, where she debuted her single “I Wrote A Song.” Shortly after her unfortunate contest loss in May 2023, Muller announced her debut studio album “Sorry I’m Late”, which was released on September 29th, 2023.
You know, I think we all have so many pressures, and I think all of us as humans, it’s so natural for us to have insecurities. It took me a while to realize that it’s okay to have those insecurities and embrace them. – Mae Muller
The 17-track album “Sorry, I’m Late” received positive reviews from critics, with some describing it as “a dreamy, upbeat slice of pop perfection that is filled with joy and hope.” Charlotte Manning of Attitude stated that “Muller isn’t afraid to stick her neck out on the line to stay authentic,” describing the album as a “beautifully put together pop album.” Writing for Clash, Ahmed Narzra wrote, “On Sorry I’m Late, Mae Muller shows that it takes time to perfect and craft a great pop album, and that’s what she has done here. Every track could be, and probably should be, a single.”
