TreVon Gardner, better known as Skilla Baby, has quickly become a pillar of the Detroit rap scene and the global rap scene. Skilla says “he’s always wanted to make music,” and he introduced his talent to the world in 2015 with his single “Look At Me Now.” After that release, he began to consistently drop by releasing more than 15 singles/EP’s over four years. His 2020 project “Crack Music” features Sada Baby, Babyface Ray, Icewear Vezzo, Bandgang Lonnie, Nef The Pharaoh, and more played a massive part in skyrocketing his musical career. The project was immediately followed up by the critically acclaimed collaboration album with fellow Detroit native Sada Baby titled “Carmelo Bryant.”
In December, he released his EP “We Eat The Most” via Geffen, claiming the Top 20 of the iTunes HipHop/Rap charts. Skilla has shown up on Fire in The Booth with Charlie Sloth and his very own No Jumper interview, both achieving virality. He has been in the studio with industry legends such as G Herbo, who posted his song Duck Your Taco on his IG feed. He was brought out by Lil Baby during the Superbowl to perform his record “Tay B Style,” you can see a clip of the two of them on stage here. After completing a tour of the south, he performed at Morehouse College and popped up in LA to join Shordie Shordie’s Rolling Loud Set. On June 16th, Skilla Baby released the remastered/deluxe version of his EP “We Eat The Most”, adding seven new songs to the project. The reloaded version of the album features G Herbo, Baby Tron, Lul Tyler, and Rylo Rodriguez. I got a chance to ask the man himself some questions below recently; make sure to check out the interview and stream his EP. Stay up y’all.
Skilla Baby Interview
Q. With your single “Icky Vicky Vibes” successfully taking off the way it did. Can you describe your progression as an artist from making that track to now?
A. “I was going through things in life, and life has hit me in different ways, positively and negatively. I’m seeing more, and I’m just trying to express that more in more music; I don’t know if I’m better lyrically or a better artist, but I’m still growing as an artist.”
Q. What was your favorite song on “Controversy” to record?
A.“My favorite track is “Gorgeous,” “DNE” and “Side Piece” because the way we went about making the records, we didn’t just rap; we were storytelling, and we came up with the story as we went; we calculated how the tracks would be and made it happen.”
Q. You were brought out on stage by Shordie Shordie at the latest RL festival. Can you describe the Rolling Loud experience for you as an artist?
A.“I think it was a milestone for me; everyone knows how big Rolling Loud is for the culture of being a musician. It was like performing at a regular concert for me, as far as doing what I had to do, but it’s just like being recognized for what you do feels good. It was like a real milestone for me.”
Q. What can we expect from you in the future?
A. People should expect growth out of me. I don’t know what that looks like because I’m not there yet, but I want to see more, be more diverse, and try new things. That’s what people can expect out of me.”
