How To Catch A Falling Knife With Gigi Perez

After releasing a handful of singles, the singer and songwriter Gigi Perez is back with the release of her new EP “How To Catch A Falling Knife.” Hailing from New Jersey by way of Florida, Gigi specializes in using her musical gift to describe her past experiences and current feelings. Her vulnerability plays a significant role in her success; in 2021, she released her breakthrough single, “Celene,” –a single dedicated to her beloved older sister, who unfortunately passed away. The single was followed by another beautiful yet vulnerable track, “Sometimes (Backwood),” — which has amassed over 84 million streams since then and hit #1 on Spotify’s U.S. viral chart.

She recently released her debut E.P, “How To Catch A Falling Knife,” via Interscope/Mogul Vision Records on April 28th, where she describes the E.P. as “not a guide but a question,” shares. “How do you? Here you will find eight songs that resemble eight chapters of my life. Following the loss of my oldest sister and the ending of my first love, I understand yearning, anguish, ruminating, sleeplessness, malaise, yearning, and rinse repeat. Where did I go Wrong? And How Can I Never Make That Mistake Again?”. The E.P. consists of multiple songs that were released previously as singles, including “Kill For You,” “When She Smiles,” “Figurines,” and many more.

This new project realizes her immense talent as a lyricist and singer—and gives listeners in search of solace something new to hold on to. “It’s scary to think that I’m going to have that out there,” Gigi admits. “But I realized that when I’m listening to the artists that have gotten me through the craziest times, I’m not necessarily thinking about them—instead, it’s like a song is holding me while I’m going through it.” Gigi Perez has joined various artists on tour, including d4vd’s latest “The Root of it All Tour” and Noah Cyrus’ “The Hardest Part Tour” last fall. This past month, she headlined her shows in Los Angeles and New York to support the release of her debut E.P., How To Catch A Falling Knife. Starting in August, Gigi Perez will be returning to the U.K., as she will be opening for the supergroup rock band Haim at their “All Points East” concert in London on August 28th. Artists such as Confidence Man, Girl In Red, Tove Lo, Mae Stephens, Romy, and others will come along as openers. If you want a ticket to attend, you can purchase your tickets here. I got to ask Gigi Perez a question during her recent press run. Make sure to check out the interview question below.

Gigi Perez Interview:

What was the creative process behind the EP “How To Catch A Falling Knife”?

A. “It came, I would say, the most naturally in the sense that I wasn’t expecting to turn songs that I was writing in my bedroom into a project, or you know, that was the aspiration at the time I was going to school in Boston, and I had to come back home Covid hit my sister passed away, so I was kind of during this time lost you know I wasn’t really happy in school. I was going through this crazy grieving process, so most of the songs I wrote were just in my bedroom, and you know, I don’t. I don’t have access to the resources to help me record a project, so the beginning of it was just very bare in the sense that I’m just writing this to get it all cause I’m going insane, and so when you know I uploaded some music online I saw that it really took off and it changed the trajectory and the intention and direction of what these songs were. For so long, I wanted to put this all together, but you know I’m just figuring out Ableton now, so there are a lot of steps to go through. It all fell together, and I asked my buddy who had just graduated if he could help me record the project; I took all the stories and pain and picked what best-explamplfied heartbreak, and it all came together.”
